The C3 generation of Corvette is also called Shark or Shark-body. The Mako Shark II concept influenced the design of the C3 generation, from which the name has come to refer to the 1968 to 1982 Corvettes. Corvettes from 1968-1972 are also called chrome bumpers because they were the last models with chrome bumpers front and rear.

History of the 1968-1972 Corvette Series. The '68 through '72 Vettes are the first five of the third generation Corvettes. The 1968 Corvette was the first year for the Mako Shark body style. This design was inspired by an actual Mako Shark on a fishing trip. The '68 Vette is exciting because it was the first of a new generation, and underwent a serious makeover!

The C3 is the third generation of the Chevrolet Corvette, and marks the second time the Corvette would carry the Stingray name, though only for the 1969-76 model years. This time it was a single word as opposed to Sting Ray as used for the 1963-67 C2 generation. The name would then be retired until 2014 when it returned with the release of the C7 .

With the longest production run of any Corvette era, the C3 generation (1968-82) was full of milestones. Third-gen Corvette Stingrays (now one word) brought us the LT-1, ZR-1, ZL-1, and L-82, plus special Pace Car and Silver Anniversary editions. C3 Stingray It would continue to be part of the Corvette name during the C3 generation, except from 1968 through 1976, it was featured as one word, Stingray.
